Auchloon, Foveran, Aberdeenshire is the earliest location identified for our Smiths from the 1841 census. Auchloon is about 12 miles north of the city of Aberdeen. In 1841, Robert Smith an agricultural labourer, was at Auchloon with his wife Elizabeth Shand. They were both born in Aberdeenshire and a William Smith age 8 was also there and possibly a grandson or other relation. At this time, their son Robert Smith had already moved away and by 1844 he had married at Mannofield in Aberdeen.

By 1851, Elizabeth was living alone at 19 Auchloon as a widow with unmarried daughter Barbara.
