The Manx Electric Railway runs close to the east coast of Isle of Man between Derby Castle at Douglas in the south, and the centre of Ramsey in the north. The line covers a distance of seventeen and seven-eighths miles.

The highest point on the line is just south of Dhoon Glen where the track runs close to the coast at Bulgham Bay.

At Derby Castle, the MER connects with the Douglas Horse Tramway which runs along the promenade to the sea terminal further south.

At Laxey, the MER connects with the Snaefell Mountain Railway which travels to the summit of Snaefell.
