William Henry Halsall and Sarah Randale Kelly, both from Manx families, married in Liverpool on the 30th of July 1894 and had ten children. For William Henry, it was his second marriage, his first wife having emigrated and settled in Newark, New Jersey, USA.
William Henry Halsall was one of eight children of Manx parents William Halsall and Mary Ann Kelly who also married in Liverpool.
William Henry Halsall, was born in 1857 at Toxteth Park, Liverpool, England while the family were living at 188 Bedford Street. He was christened on 15th November 1857 at St. Peters Church, Liverpool.
William Henry Halsall's father, William Halsal was born in Isle of Man around 1835. He was a labourer in his early working life but went to sea from at least 1873. William Halsall was "engineer" on a number of steamships including Brunel's famous SS Great Britain. His father in turn was Thomas Halsal, a joiner. William may have been born in Malew and his mother may have been Isabella Quirk as there are census (1841 & 1851), christening (1833) and marriage (1822) records that match closely. It is possible that Richard Quine, who was a witness at the Liverpool marriage of William and Mary Ann in 1857, is the same one who was at Glen Rushen, Patrick Parish were William was too in 1851, while both were working in Lead Mining. |
