Forget ships in bottles, this is a model ship which can be stored in an envelope! I have been working for some while on the various design problems of paper pop-up ships. In theory, any symmetrical shape can be achieved. Having produced several such designs of buildings, I was intrigued by the challenge. The basic hull shape is fairly straightforward, but to fit it with masts and sails is a little more difficult. The masts move freely in slots, secured only by tabs at the bottom of the sails which are intended to expand across the diagonal as the card is opened. |

The design is loosly based upon drawings of 16th century carracks, trading ships with high fore and aft decks. They were the forerunners of the later galleons, which were highly armed warships. |

The model components are on two A4 (297x210mm) pages, to be printed on to thin card. The model is to be mounted on a heavier card, 380 x 260mm (15” x 10”), which is folded in half. Blue card representing the sea, as in these pictures, is the most appropriate. I have explained the assembly sequence in two pages, together with a third page, which the builder will need as a template for the assembly of masts and sails.
