This Museum (previously known as the Museum of Garden History), is unique in that it is housed in a very fine Medieval Church in central London, standing on the South side of the Thames, opposite the Houses of Parliament.
The Church is St. Mary-at-Lambeth. It’s fortunes had declined, congregations had dwindled, and it was closed and deconsecrated in 1972. There were plans to demolish the building. It was saved when the tombs of two 17th century plant hunters, the John Tradescants, were discovered in the Churchyard. So plans were developed to save and reopen the building as the world’s first museum dedicated to garden history.
