Peter, Mary - Collectiong Victoriana. Arco, 1st, 1965. [1965] Until fairly recently the word Victorian was applied to objects in a derogatory sense, suggesting an over-ornate ugliness. Victoriana is now all the rage, thanks to those who could separate the objects of real worth from the obviously vulger. The vigour and inventiveness of the Victorians often led to hideous profusion but there is also a real charm and originality in much of what they produced. The aim behind this book is to show how many comely pieces of furniture and really charming pieces of small china, nick-nacks, etc., can be readily accommodated in the modern home. The author discusses the Victorian dining, drawing and bed rooms; the kitchen; Victorian pottery and porcelain; glass, silver and plate, jewellery and bric-a-brac, concluding with a chapter on the Victorian garden. (Wrapper flap). 8¾" x 5¼", 190pp plus 9 plates, cream vegitable parchment, hardback. Index. Illustrated with 17 sides of monochrome photographs, and with many drawings within the text by Jenefer Peter. Very good (no inscriptions, no bumps, NOT ex-library) complete with good (edge-wear, especially head/foot of spine; slight 'scrunge' to top edge of back-panel) wrapper, NOT price-cut.
