Oliver St John

The coat of arms of Oliver St John is a shield made up of twelve 'quarterings', or smaller shields.  These record the various members of the St John family (top four), the Beauchamp family (next four), and the family of St John at Lydiard Tregoze and Purley (the bottom row).  The helmet rests on a 'mantle' or cushion of red and white, and has two supporters, an eagle and  monkey.  The motto, 'Deus Providebit' means 'God will provide'.

Oliver St John (1560-1630), Viscount Grandison of Limerick , was a soldier and a statesman, serving as a general in the army and Lord Deputy and then as Lord High Treasurer.  Upon retirement from public life he lived in the manor house adjacent to the church (where Montevetro now stands).
