Organ

The original parish organ was purchased by public subscription in 1791 at the cost of £230.  It was moved down form the gallery in 1877, and twice more rebuilt, before being replaced by a completely new instrument in 1993.  This new organ is the work of Saxon Aldred, and replaces the rather wheezy pneumatic action of the old instrument with a mechanical action - with suspended tracker action to the two manuals.

Just underneath the organ pipes, two woodcuts reproduce the images of the small circular windows in the sanctuary -- with one important difference.  The Lamb of God in the northern window has been replaced by a ram, the symbol of Young's Brewery, who made a very generous contribution to the cost of its construction.  It is thought to be one of only two organs in London displaying the symbol of a brewery. (The other, for those who are interested, is St Olave's, Mitcham which displays the symbol of the Courage brewery - our thanks to Simon Nieminski for pointing this out).

The organ is dedicated to the memory of Harold Davies who was organist at St Mary's for a remarkable 50 years, from 1938 to 1988.
