AN OUTLINE TO SOILING AND STAINING

Rapid Soiling Problems Occur When:

1. there is a defect in manufacturing

Excessive spin finish

Failure to apply protectants

2.  improper maintenance occur

the carpet does not dry within an appropriate amount of time after cleaning.

there is an excessive amount of residue left in the carpet after cleaning.

there is an insufficient amount of cleaning.

Stain Resistance can be missing when:

  1. stain resistance has not been properly applied during manufacturing

The carpet yarns above were originally white. The ones on the left were pretreated with a stain resistant chemical, the ones on the right were not. Both were soaked into a red dye solution and then rinsed with tap water. This would indicate that the yarns were not originally stain resistant, but could be made so.

  2. the carpet has been maintained or used inappropriately

  3. the carpet has been cleaned with chemicals inappropriate for stain resistant carpet

It has become all too common for some outlets to make wild anti-soiling comments and claims. Some are even making the cardinal sin of calling all stain resistant treatments 'Scotchguard' or 'scotchguard like, as some call vacuum cleaners 'Hoovers'.

This is straight forward mis-selling as each manufacturer of chemical resistant treatments have their own disclaimers and warrantees. Don't put up with this form of mis-selling, If it happens to you insist on a WHOPPING discount or your money back.

Just remember, just because your carpet has had a treatment it doesn't mean it is stain proof to everything, read the small print if it is a basis on which is persuading you to purchase one carpet over another. What it does usually mean is that the carpet is more resistant to some types of staining than a similar fibre without the treatment.
