On 12 March 2002 the property developers held a meeting to present their revised plans for the Castle. The proposals have been under consideration and consultation since then
Despite Cross Towers "spin" in the press the current plans are for 46 dwellings on the site.
- 26 Flats in the Castle
- 9 Houses in castle outbuildings
- 1 Additional new house in the Castle courtyard
- 3 New houses of a modern architectural design in the castle grounds
- 7 New houses of the same modern design in the adjoining fields outside the castle grounds
Cross Tower Ventures have not explored other uses for the site in particular their public relations advisor admitted that they have not looked at keeping the castle open to the public as a park.
Background
In the summer of 2000 Riber Castle was bought by the newly formed property development company Cross Tower Ventures. The company is a partnership between Mr. Alan Wright & Mr Paul Caplan. The price paid for the castle was reputedly £700,000. Riber Castle Wildlife park closed and Cross Tower announced it's intention to "save" the castle. It intended to do this by converting the castle into apartments and to build houses in the castle walls and a "village style development in the field to the west of the the castle".
in March 2001 a planning application was lodged for 58 dwellings in total. Due to overwhelming public and institutional opposition this application was withdrawn.
