"The Baptism of Rus" a talk by Dr. Theodore Voronov

The Orthodox Approach to Mission

Books could be, (and have been), written on this. Some of the best guides have come from Orthodox missionaries who have gained wisdom by doing it rather than by talking about it. I offer the following hints in the belief that they reflect best practice.

  1. Expect God to act every day but think in terms of hundreds of years.

  2. Never, ever, sacrifice Christian Truth on the altar of expediency, popularity or comfort.

  3. Don't do it unless you are prepared to suffer and die in the process.

  4. Always listen to God and your hearers before you speak.

  5. Prefer silence before entering a crowd.

  6. Use whatever is to hand.

  7. Trust those whom God has touched ... but train them as well.

  8. Don't impose your culture on someone else.

  9. Prefer to be with the little ones, the truly great will join you there.

  10. Always step out as God leads, confident that He will always be there to uphold you.
