Scaley Face in Budgerigars
Scaley Face in Budgerigars is caused by a small mite that burrows under the skin around the beak and leg area of a Budgerigar. Although the mite is not visible to the human eye, the effect it will have on you Budgerigar will certainly be very noticeable. The beak will start to look as though it is white and crusty. The legs will turn the same way. This is caused by the mite as it feeds around these areas. Scaley Face is very infectious and can spread throughout your stud of birds quite quickly if left unchecked.
To treat Scaley Face is very simple. There are many methods on the market. The simplest is to rub Vaseline onto the cere and legs of the budgerigar. This suffocates the mite and most of the problem is solved. The treatment should be kept up for a full week as the mite lays eggs and they will be hatching all of the time You should also treat the whole of your stud because some birds may be carrying the mite but the symptoms are not showing. The birds should start to improve almost immediately but a close eye should be kept on your stud for the next few weeks.
Now that the cure has been applied to your birds a thorough clean of your aviary is necessary. All wood should be thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate disinfectant
