Breeding Lutino Budgerigars

When starting to breed red-eyes for the first time it may be best to buy a pair that are reasonably priced. It take's time to understand what you are breeding and what you would like to breed into your birds. If you are just breeding to sell to pet shops then a few pairs of Lutino's are as much as you need. The size and quality are not as important. If however you were breeding for exhibition purposes then you would need to consider the quality of your stock and maybe start with a fair standard of stock.

If you start with reasonably priced birds and it does not work out, then you have lost nothing. Any chicks you may breed you will find a ready market for them at most pet shops. You can play around with this stock knowing that you have not invested a lot of money. Once you have bred a few birds and you understand them, it is then time to improve your stock if you would like to exhibit them.

Start by looking at the birds at local shows. See who has the birds you like and who is exhibiting them. Ask if you can go to see his/her birds and if they have anything for sale. It maybe that you can only afford to buy one pair. Once you have bred from these birds for a season you will then have your foundation stock. You can go back the following year to the same person and purchase related stock to put back to your own birds. This will save you a year or two if you want to go into line breeding.

On the next page there is a Breeding Chart chart that I use for pairing Lutino Budgerigars and also a record of the progress that I have made with my own stock. The pictures are of my own birds.
