Preparation
in breeding Budgerigars
Cage preparation is an important
thing, from pairing up to the final chicks, can hinge around these factors.
The following is just a quick guide line that may or may not help.
Once the pair of
birds settle down to breed the cage will quickly get very dirty. It is
best if you are able to clean it with as little
disturbance as possible. Bird sand and grit placed on the bottom of
the cage floor is one of the ways of achieving this. It keeps
the bottom of the cage dry as any wet dropping are absorbed straight
into the sand. When the cage needs to be cleaned the sand can be
quickly scraped and removed and fresh sand put in it's place.
I also like to use
a layer of wood shavings on the bottom of the cage. This soaks up the
wet loose droppings and can be removed with the paper, the wood
shavings can then be topped up. Before the birds are placed into the
cage to breed it is wise to make the following available.
Cuttle Fishbone.
Iodine Blocks
Mineralised Grit or Oystershell Grit.
Some form of softfood.
