MX5 PLUG LEAD INFO

One of the VERY few weak points on the Roadster / MX5 is the Plug Leads. They will generally last between 20-30k miles before self-destruction. Mine went recently at 19k, very sudden loss of performance, bad misfire, backfiring, not good!!

On inspection, we found No. 4 plug looking like this:-

The lead was stained a sandy colour...I now know this is a classic sign of water leakage into the access tube that leads to the plug cap.

The other plugs showed signs of heat / moisture damage like this:-

I decided on a set of HotWires, high quality silicon leads (7mm). These come with a set of adapters like this:-

They provide a better water seal than the standard ones, looks like this when fitted:-

who also recommended a different NGK plug, BKR6E

 the standard one being BKR5E...also, a different gap setting of 1mm. This has proved an excellent "mod"...total cost £41 inclusive.
