Gambia - Restaurants
The Gambia is a developing country and the tourist industry is developing at a rapid rate. Along with this developing tourist industry, restaurants and bars abound.
Many nations are represented in the restaurant trade here. Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, German, French, Italian, English and, of course, Gambian.
Sherrillian's Restaurant.
Located on the Senagambia Strip close to the Senegambia and Kairaba Hotels.
Specialities: Excellent Menu. For more information, visit the website at: http://www.sherrillians.gm
The Bakadaji.
Located on the Senagambia Highway next to the Palma Rima Hotel.
Specialities: Excellent African evening on Thursdays and
Fridays with an extensive buffet and African dancing.
Luigi's Italian restaurant. As a vegetarian, I tend to stick with the places that I know best and because I often stay at Luigi's, between Kotu and Senegambia, I tend to eat there.
The Dolphin at Senegambia provides a decent menu I once enjoyed a vegetarian Shepherds pie? in clean surroundings.
Ali Baba, at Kotu, adjacent to the Badala Park Hotel, you will find this restaurant where, it is said, the staff go out of their way to ensure that you enjoy your meal. Even making special shopping trips to cater for requested meals by vegetarians. Sounds good.
The Bacchaus Bar. It is situated between The The Laguna Beach Hotel and the recently re-opened Palm Grove hotel. It is a restaurant and beach bar with friendly staff and well worth a visit. The proprietor, Aziz B Khan, also owns The Calabash night-club opposite the Palma Rima hotel. He also opened a restaurant below the night-club this year, which is highly recommended.
What I really want to do with this section is invite people to tell me of their favorite eating places and I will willingly include them on this page. Likewise, if you have a restaurant in The Gambia send me an Email and get a free plug.
Tony, from the UK, writes "My favorite restaurant was definitely Awa's in Brufut next to
Ghana town. Although Awa's is not the exact name of the restaurant, it's a small local restaurant on the beach, all the locals know
where it is so it's not hard to find. I hate myself for not remembering
the exact name. I only remember it because the owner
looks exactly like one of my aunts from JA. Massive plates of tasty spicy
rice and fish for just D5 - might have gone up by now - but that's well cheap
don't you think? There's lots of local shops in the same area so get out and
help the local community and spend your hard earned cash there."
Denise from the UK says.
"The restaurant under the Calabash nightclub deserves a
mention. Instead of going straight past it to
Churchills give this restaurant a try. It has to be
the cleanest in the Gambia loos included !!! Good
food as well. A very nice decor I can't rate it high
enough". (The Calabash, as you all know, is on the road between the Palma Rima Hotel and the beach)
It is not possible to travel far in the main tourist areas without seeing a restaurant, or a sign advertising a restaurant, so jump in a taxi and try it. Be adventurous!
Hopefully, within a short time I will be able to list the many restaurants, along with their locations, on this page.
