Gambia - Safety
The Gambia has many hazards and care should be taken constantly. Uncovered storm drains are a major hazard, particularly after dark. Around the markets headroom can be a danger, look for timbers or other obstacles that could give you a major headache.
Don't assume that drivers will give way anywhere in The Gambia. Most drivers consider pedestrians to be a nuisance and tourists are treated with the same contempt as the locals. Also bear in mind that there are no stringent tests on motor vehicles and as a result very few vehicles are really fit to be on the road.
Construction sites are lethal. Stay well away. Recently, a six storey building collapsed whilst still under construction. Several people where killed or injured.
Don't go on to the beach alone after dark. Don't wander into any quiet areas after dark. Stay where there are plenty of other people around or take someone with you. This particularly applies to Banjul, Serekunda and the beach.
