Holidays to The Gambia

Gambia - Health

Yes - There are mosquitoes. Try to cover up at night. Use insect repellant creams, they work very well. "Autan" and "Jungle Formular" are good brands. The creams are less likely to stain clothing than the gels. Use these repelents as well as, not instead of, any medical advise that you have been given!

See your own doctor. He / she will advise on current needs for Gambia. Mosquitos are in abundance. Long sleeves or insect repellant for the evenings, also anti-malarial tablets are recommended.

You will be advised not to eat salads. The salad itself is fine, it's the preparation that causes the problems. I have eaten salads in The Gambia without any problems. Most restaurants take the greatest of care with food preparation, after all, it's in their best interest to keep you healthy.

One major health hazard is the cheap booze in Gambia. Shopping around the various supermarkets you will find whisky, vodka, brandy, gin and rum starting at around £3.00 ($5.00) a bottle. A lot of self discipline is required.

Everyone should be aware of the dangers of too much sun and there's plenty of it. Sun screens are available in Gambia, but tend to be expensive. Take plenty with you.

If you do fall ill there are plenty of pharmacies where advice and medications can be obtained. Alternatively, there are excellent medical facilities available in Gambia, although mostly very busy. The best bet is to go private and claim the cost back from your insurance. You wouldn't go without insurance, would you? Recommended is the Swedish clinic on the Senegambia highway, not far from the Hotel Senegambia.
