Gambia - Farafenni
North of the river Gambia, Farrafenni is a small market town
There are two routes to Farafenni and neither is easy. From Banjul you can take the ferry to Barra. From Barra there is a bus or transport to Kerewan, where a bridge is currently under construction. Until the bridge is open, this tributary to the river Gambia is crossed by ferry. On the other side transport will take you to Farafenni. The main problem with this route is the road, it's not surfaced and the dust gets everywhere. The last time I took this route I had to stand in the shower, rucksack and all, to get rid of the red dust.
The alternative is the bus or transport on the South bank as far as Soma, then transport to the ferry and, once on the North bank, transport up the hill into Farafenni. The road to Soma is quite good but from Soma to the ferry it disintegrates into ruts and troughs. The same again on the North bank, until approaching Farafenni, where it improves.
The bus leaves Banjul and passes through Serekunda, stopping at various places. Transport for Soma leaves Serekunda regularly throughout the day. Ask any local in Serekunda and you will be directed to the right place.
Distances: On the North bank. Barra - Kerewan, 50 Km. Kerewan - Farafenni, 62 Km. On the South bank. Banjul - Soma, 198 Km (Serekunda - Soma, 180 Km) Soma - Ferry - Farafenni, 17 Km. The South bank route is a greater distance, but the quickest of the two.
EDDIE'S BAR / RESTAURANT: In the center of Farafenni, close by the market, this hotel could be nice if only the owner would invest in some paint and cleaning materials. The rooms are set around an open area where you can sit and relax.
THE FANTASIA is on the road to the ferry, about 1 Km from the center of town. It is really a brothel.
