Gambia - Crime
Most tourist that become victims of crime do so because they are not behaving as they would in their own country. If you take the same precautions in The Gambia as you would in your own country then it is highly unlikely that you will come to any harm.
Violent crime is very rare in The Gambia, although occassionally it does happen. Petty crime is on the increase, mainly pickpockets and oportunist thieves. Don't leave anything lying around. It doesn't matter whether or not it is valuable, the thief may not know that. Don't keep valuables in loose pockets or easy to open bags. Bum bags are pretty good.
Serekunda and Banjul are the places to watch for pickpockets. Be aware if you suddenly get jostled or someone is obviously trying to distract you. If you feel intimidated call someone, most people are extremely honest, tell them what you suspect is happening and you will find help is on hand.
It's nice to have a beach all to yourself, but not really safe. You have to consider that the very fact that you are in The Gambia means that your holiday is costing you more than any would be thief would earn in several years. Don't put temptation their way. Never go on the beach alone at night. You probably would not do so in your own country so don't do it in The Gambia.
Females should take particular care if invited to visit the homes of local males. If you must go, go during daylight hours. Never make your first visit at night. It has been known for females to stay at the homes of "friends" only to wake up and find the "friend" gone, along with all clothing and valuables of the unsuspecting visitor.
Likewise, men should have reservations about visiting the homes of females, especially if invited there by a local male. Whether he is a genuine pimp, or setting you up to be robbed is something you will find out sooner or later.
Generally speaking, I feel safer in Banjul at midnight than I feel in London on a Saturday afternoon. I hope that puts the Gambian crime threat in perspective. It really is no threat at all, and a little common sense will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
