BAKAU LODGE: Situated in Bakau and just 220 meters from the sea this new complex offers excellent value for independant travellers. Detached bungalows with double beds, ceiling fans, refrigerators, hot water, tea making facilities and a daily room service to ensure clean linen. Two of the bungalows consist of a bed/sitting room with a seperate toilet and shower. Four of the bungalows consist of a seperated bedroom and sitting room plus the toilet and shower room. Although there are no cooking facilities the site is adjacent to a restaurant with a variety of restaurants, both local and European, within easy walking distance. 24 hr security guarantees safety for guests and their belongings. There are plenty of local bars in the area, but for a less raunchy night out there are tourist hotels in close proximity. WILL & SUE'S BED & BREAKFAST: Situated in Fajara, in a quiet area yet close by amenities. Within easy reach of the beach, restaurants and night life. Clean comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. Transport passes by frequently on the not so far away Kairaba Avenue. Most journeys will be made by private taxis, of which there are many passing by until late in the night. To Bakau £0.40 ($0.60) (Double this price late evening. Serekunda will cost about same price.

APOLLO HOTEL: In the heart of Banjul, not far from the port. The rooms are decent and clean, but a bit pricey. I've also heard of people (men actually) being disturbed during the night by ladies of the same name, but, it's in that part of Banjul. Private taxis to and from here, particularly at night, it's safer.

DALABA LODGE: For those who want to escape from the normal tourist areas. Situated on Island of Jinack, North of Barra, which is half in Gambia and half in Senegal. "The Lodge is sited in unspoilt bush surroundings with nature all around. The extensive grounds include banana, guava and mango trees and date palms where hammocks are provided for your comfort and peace."

ATLANTIC GUEST HOUSE: Situated between the African Village Hotel and Fajara on Atlantic Road the Atlantic Guest House is overlooking the ocean. Clean comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. Transport does pass by on the road outside but not so frequently. Most journeys will be made by private taxis of which there are many passing by until late in the night. To Bakau £0.30 ($0.45) (Double this price late evening. Fajara will cost the same prices. TEL: 496237
BALMORAL APARTMENTS: Situated just off the Senegambia highway, close to the Senegambia area, Balmoral Apartments is a very hospitable and friendly establishment contained in it's own private complex including swimming pool, lounging and barbeque area set in tropical gardens.. The apartments are beautifully furnished and self catering. Shops and other amenities are only a short stroll away, and the excellent sandy beach just a few minutes way. And all for less than $50 dollars a night.

THE BERLINER HOTEL: Situated on the road between Fajara and Senegambia the Bantaba is clean and comfortable and the price is reasonable. I am advised that the German owner is a friendly sort of guy who makes all visitors feel welcome. Approximately 500 meters from the beach the hotel has a bar & restaurant. It also has a beach bar, from which a path leads directly to the hotel.
BAOBAB LODGE: Situated in a quiet location just five minutes walk from Bijilo beach and a short, reasonable taxi ride from the busy Senegambia area, with its restaurants, bars and night clubs.

CAPE POINT HOTEL: Situated at Cape Point between the Sunwing Hotel and the supermarket, this family run hotel is small but very friendly. Swimming pool, bar, restaurant and some good, local entertainment. The local band, Roots Manding, plays there once a week. Shares the same excellent beach as the Siva Sunbeach.

FAJARA GUEST HOUSE: Situated just off Kairaba Avenue (Pipeline Road) in Fajara the guest house is small, quiet and reasonably priced. Handy for bars, restaurants and transport to Serekunda, Bakau and just about anywhere. Fares to Bakau and Serekunda £0.15 ($0.25). Late evening private taxis are everywhere. Bakau and Serekunda £0.70 ($1.00). Everything is negotiable.

GREEN LINE MOTEL: Situated in Serekunda close to the market the Green Line Motel boasts rooms with air conditioning as standard but the electricity supply was not very reliable when I last stayed there in December 1997. The rooms are clean, reasonably comfortable and at an affordable price. The motel has a bar and there is an excellent cafe close by for breakfast. If you plan to stay here please refer to the section on safety, in particular - crime. TEL: 394225
KANTORA HOTEL: In Banjul on Independence Drive the Kantora is clean and comfortable and within easy reach of all the points where the transport leaves for SereKunda and beyond. Bars and restaurants not too far away and the lively, but raunchy, Oasis nightclub is within walking distance. TEL: 228715
LUIGI'S RESTAURANT:Situated towards the beach from the Palma Rima, Luigi's is known throughout the Kombos area. Not just for the fine Italian and English food, but also for the excellent accommodation at the rear. Accommodation is comprised of double rooms or three roomed apartments with a breakfast bar and hot plate in the lounge, comfortable bedroom and a clean toilet and shower. The maid will also do your laundry for a small charge. The restaurant is quite remarkable with a fountain inside and there is also the rooftop tables for those warm nights. Luigi and his wife Julie will make you most welcome, as will all the staff. A 1 minute walk will have you on the beach where solomon's bar - restaurant will tend to your needs whilst you soak up the sun. The only complaint I have about Luigi's, not enough accommodation. It really is important to arrange your accommodation before arriving in The Gambia.

MANJAI LODGE: Situated on the main road between the Kotu area and Serekunda, this hotel is a recent feature in Gambia. The complex offers comfortable rooms around a pleasant courtyard with a swimming pool. With the vibrant Serekunda just five minutes away in one direction and the beach less than five minutes away in the other, this is ideal for those that like to enjoy the sun and sand without paying the price of a tourist hotel. There is a continuous stream of private and shared transport passing by the front of the hotel towards both Serekunda and the beach area.

ROMANA HOTEL: Situated in Bakau, next door to Kumba's Bar, on Atlantic Road, between Bakau market and the supermarket. The Romana has recently re-opened under new ownership. I understand that the new American owners have carried out extensive refurbishment. The rooms are comfortable, set around a pleasant garden area. The bar / restaurant is now open. Prior to closing for refurbishment, the price was £10.00 ($15.00) per night B.B. Now, the new owners are asking £8-00 ($12.00) per night. Recent advise is that there is still no refrigerator. The rooms have stand fans provided free and refurbishment is continuing. Becoming better value all the time.

SAFARI GARDEN HOTEL: Situated in Fajara, not far from the Fajara Hotel and the Fajara Guest House, the Safari Garden Hotel is popular with clean air con rooms at a reasonable price, a pool suitable for the limited number of guests, within easy reach of restaurants and bars, and as with the Fajara Guest House, taxis and transport is readily available. The main highway is a one minute walk - the beach a ten minute stroll. TEL: 495887. FAX: 496042
SAMBOU'S Bar & Restaurant: In Bakau near Cape Point and opposite the Palma Rima Hotel. Offers good, clean accommodation at a reasonable price. I've never stayed there but it's well spoken of by those travellers that have. The one in Bakau offers more to those that enjoy a bit of night life. whereas Sambous' near the Palma Rima is better for the beach. Both have excellent transport connections to Serekunda, Banjul or Fajara.
SEA BREEZE APARTMENTS: Situated on the Senegambia Highway, Kololi, the apartments look clean and comfortable. This type of accommodation should be ideal for visitors who like to be away from all the formalities of the tourist hotels and yet still within walking distance of the Senegambia area with its bars, restaurants and beaches.
