Gambia - Basse
If you want to stay on tarred roads, don't go any further. Beyond here it's dust all the way. In Basse you can find transport to Tambacounda or Velingara in Senegal or to Conackry in Guinea.
Basse is the first main town you will arrive at if entering The Gambia from Tambacounda or Velingara. Likewise, the last place to stock up if you are leaving The Gambia by this route.There is a bar / disco in Basse that boasts its own generator so a cold beer is possible if there are any problems with the electricity supply, of which there often been many.
THE APOLLO HOTEL is on the main street and you will pass it on your arrival. It is only a short walk from where the bus or other transport will drop you off. The rooms are cheap and contain two single beds. When there is electricity in town you can opt for an air conditioned room at a little extra cost. The toilets and showers are housed at the rear of the hotel so, if the electricity is off, take a torch.
THE PLAZA HOTEL is a better bet. Situated in the center of town on the road towards the ferry where you can get a double room at a reasonable price.
THE GAMBIA GOVERNMENT REST HOUSE is about 2 Km from the center of town. Cheap, but charges per person.
THE LINGUERE MOTEL is on the edge of town. Clean, self contained rooms are almost twice the price of anything else available.
THE TRAVELLERS LODGE is a filthy brothel near the market. Hardly worth a mention.
Plenty of places to eat, a disco, and don't forget to visit "Uncle's" bar.
