Gambia - Authorities

The Gambia has a similar structured authority as most of Europe. An elected parliament, police force, military, and a justice system based on that in the UK. All the authorities are very supportive of tourism. However, Tourists falling foul of the law are treated no differently than local people.

The police come down very hard on tourists found with drugs. Set-ups are not unknown. You fancy a little Ganja from one of the local lads that has been offering to sell you some ever since you arrived in the country, you go to his compound to smoke it, or he brings it to your hotel. Don't be surprised if, no sooner it is in your possession, the police mysteriously arrive. It's a blow to you, but it's a double whammy for the pusher. He gets paid by you and he gets his dope back later. Meanwhile, you are looking at a large fine.

Large scale bribery and corruption came to an end with the coup in 1994, but corruption still may still exist on a smaller scale. The best way to avoid becoming involved with it is - stay within the law
.

Generally speaking, the authorities are very helpful, but don't expect expediency. Getting visas for other West African countries usually takes one to two days. Everything else takes forever - or so it seems. If you do have to deal with any of the authorities for whatever reason, get to know the name of the person who is dealing with you so, if you have to return again, you can make sure you see the same person, if not, you may have to start all over again.
