Disciple is a program of reading the Bible, private meditation and study and weekly meetings which lasts for 34 weeks. The idea behind the program is that we learn about Christ, God and the work of the Holy Spirit in today's Church and society through reading tbe Bible and letting what God has caused to be said about him and about his relationship with humans teach us and change us. It aims for a revitalisation of the Church at grass roots level.
Using a booklet with set readings for each day the group reads through about 80% of the Bible in the 34 weeks it meets together. It involves about 30 minutes reading and prayer each day.
Sounds like a big committment?
Yes, it is. But as one of twelve who have just finished the program I can't recommend it highly enough.
I can only talk about my own experience (although there is a video which has myself and the rest of the team on it if you want more information). Disciple gave me a real knowledge of the Bible, a deeper understanding of who God is and what he wants for me and for the world and a real sense of friendship and a unique closeness with the rest of the group.
Disciple is so good for Churches for two reasons:-
you can study the program at whatever stage of the Christian life you are at and at whatever age you are. Our group seemed to flourish on the difference in us all. the program encourages you to go into the Church and make a contribution and to make a concrete contribution to society. If you want to know more, Jenny Impey, the minister here at Upper Tooting, is a main coordinator of the scheme in the UK. So give her a ring - 0181 672 8387
