Clavells Tower and Kimmeridge Bay. Clavells Tower was originally built as a folly in the 19th century, before being used as a coastguard’s lookout. It is now disused, but is a good reference point above Kimmeridge Bay. Look out for the ‘nodding donkey’ extracting oil from the oil shale west of Kimmeridge.

The waterfall at Freshwater Steps. Good place for a rest before climbing to the top of Hounstout Cliff.

In the distance is the route to St Adhelm’s Head. Below the headland is the excellently named Ring Bum Gardens whilst on the clifftop is a small 12th century chapel.

Looking back from Emmetts Hill towards Hounstout and the coastline to the west. This is above Chapmans Pool.

A change in the landscape - these are the limestone cliffs of Purbeck. Looking towards Winspit and Seacombe and the old quarries.

Looking east towards Anvil Point. In the spring you should look out for orchids near the path.

Also you may be lucky enough to see one of the small number of puffins that nest in the area.

Looking back along the coast, above Dancing Ledge. There is a small swimming pool cut into the natural rock platform by quarrymen around a hundred years ago.

Looking from Durlston towards Swanage and Old Harry Rocks.

Durlston is a country park with a good information centre where you can listen to dolphins and porpoises travelling in the English Channel via a hydrophone.
