Way Down South, End of the Road

Key West is an island down south in the Florida Keys at the very end of US Route 1. Because of its remoteness from the mainland it manages to retain its vernacular architecture of tightly packed wooden houses, mixing shacks with antebellum (pre Civil War) mansions surrounded by porches. Porches are a welcoming social space, a threshold between the public and private realms. I cycle or walk around looking for pictures that give clues to the particular feel and lush lifestyle of this place. 2008-2010
