SCHOPPMANN
- Michael Ralph Schopman

1836
My gt grandfather was Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Schoppmann, from Schlüsselburg, Germany, born 25 Sep 1836, one of eight children. I have traced the family back to Johann Schoppmann born 1734 at Seelenfeld.

1852
He came to England aged approximately 16 years. Purpose, whether to visit relatives (Schwiers) or to work, unknown.

1856
Understood to have returned to Schlüsselburg; reasons unknown.

1858
He enlisted for active military service on 13 Oct 1858, a musketeer in the 3rd company of the 6th Westfalischer Infantry Regiment number 55.

1861
He returned to England. His father, Christian Schoppmann, was a carpenter, so it's probable that EFW Schoppmann came over as a general immigrant. His mother's maiden name was Karoline Friederike Wilheminne Schwier.

1867
'Sugar baker' stated as his occupation on the certificate of his marriage to Eliza Allen of Somersham, Huntingdonshire.

1869/70
Family moved to 5 King Edward Street (next road to Dunk Street).

1871
Eliza Schopman and 2 sons appear on the census at 39 Dunk Street, housekeeping for uncle ELV Schwier and sons, whose wife and mother was recently deceased. Unknown for how long she helped them.

1878
'Sugar boiler' stated on his naturalisation certificate, 9 Apr 1878, living at 5 King Edward Street for the previous 8 years. Changed name to Ernest Frederick William Schopman.
Naturalisation enquiry states "Manages the business of his uncle, a sugar boiler", ie. ELV Schwier.

1881
'Sugar refiner' stated on census returns, living at 39 Dunk Street with wife & 4 sons.
Between 1881 & 1885 made the move from Mile End New Town to Apsley Road, Walthamstow.

1889
Died; address 9 Apsley Road, Walthamstow.

1900
'Sugar refiner' stated as father's occupation on the marriage certificate of his son CJA Schopman.

1908
His wife Eliza died; certificate states 'widow of William Schopman, a sugar refiner'.

1909
Occupation stated as 'manager' on his youngest son's marriage certificate.

I'm grateful to Michael Ralph Schopman for this case study. We would both be pleased to receive further information regarding the Schoppmann & Schwier families, if anyone has any.
