Horst Roessler writes : "With the exception of the Boses sugar refining never played an important role in Bremen. The city's staple import goods were tobacco, rice and cotton. In 1810 even the largest of the Bose firms employed no more than about 18 'Zuckerbackerknechte' and until mid-century none of the few remaining refineries became equipped with vacuum pans and steam driven machinery. The industry offered few jobs and this was one of the reasons why people from the agricultural villages near Bremen preferred to move to London."
