GREENOCK 1905
Brewers Sugar Company Ltd
&
Greenock Harbour Trust Treasure's Office

The Brewers Sugar Company Ltd took over the Berryyards Refinery from Alex Scott & Sons abt 1896, and later became the Westburn Sugar Refineries of Tate & Lyle. Ironically, Abram Lyle had moved his production from Greenock to Silvertown after the Greenock Harbour Trust had refused to provide an exclusive discharging point for raw sugar.

With the arrival of raw cane sugar dependent on foreign production, shipping, weather etc, The Brewers Sugar Co Ltd found it necessary to store surplus stock in the warehousing and sheds provided by the Harbour Trust Board on the quayside at Greenock. For this they were charged one penny per ton per week, and the above record shows that Brewers Sugar Co, on 25 Feb 1905, paid £30 19s 11d for storage, mainly in Sheds 10-13 from Oct to Dec 1904 but also in Shed 2 from Apr 1904 ... 7439 pence represents a lot of sugar, and part of it had already been heavily discounted.
This sugar came from various parts, and the details of the ships, quantities and storage follows ....
