This section of the site contains details of a project created for pupils ages
7 to 11, to study change and continuity through the developing nature of housing.
It was based upon St. Fagan's, the Museum of Welsh Life located immediately
to the North of Cardiff in S. Wales in the UK. (For a location map, click
here) and created following a visit arranged for Glasbury Primary School.
We selected four houses typical of their period and then devised a simple worksheet which enabled comparisions between the house. We were aware that this is simplifying the complex isues such as, varying regional patterns, differing types of houseing for different occuipations etc., but we still feel it is a valid way to teach change and continuity by studying the development of houses and households.
Here we give details of the worksheet used and examples of pupil work resulting. We also give details of the four houses visited together with not only examples of pupil work but also nearly four dozen pictures of the houses.
This material has been designed to be used in one of ways:-
The Museum is large, however we feel it is best used as a resource for projects such as these, with visits tightly focused to gain maximum educational value, rather than the hopeless task of trying to see everything. The education section at the Museum can give further ideas for other projects.
