Canal Project Pages.

Arranging the Visit.

The project which gave arise to these pages was composed to meet the National Curriculumn target of studying the development of transport. It was decided to structure this around a day visit to the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal with the pupils of Glasbury Primary School and by 'following' a piece of limestone to seek to understand the working of Transport and Industrialisation in this area.It is possible to either use these pages to carry out a similar visit yourself, or to use them as a resource in their own right for the study of 19th century transport. In fact these pages will also be of interest to anyone who shares our love of canals.

The Brecon and Abergavenny Canal is to be found in South East Powys, in the United Kingdom.

On the following five pages are given the details of what is to be seen at each location, directions to get there and appropriate illustrations. To find the locations you will need Ordance Survey map 161, scale 1:50,000. The six figure grid references match this map. Each page does however, have a general map as well linked to it, to assist you.

Linked to each page are pages written after the visit by our year 6 pupils sharing their experiences: -

There are many other locations worth visiting such as the Waterfolk Canal Museum at Llanfrynach near Brecon and the Restored Wharfs at Goytre, details of both are among the links given on the first page. However you can only cover so much in a day, and these four sites are offered as our solution on how to teach the pupils exactly what a canal was. Please use this material, but remember that permission must be sought for all comercial uses and an acknowledgement of the source must be made with all uses.
