Account of Building a model lock
by Sam.
How we made a canal lock.

We got a box and we broke it down to give us a flat cardboard base.
Then we stuck the step of the lock on the base and we made it out of balsa wood. Then we cut walls out (for the lock) from the card board box. We had to make four of them.

We painted inside the lock blue to make it look like water and we painted the wall grey to represent the colour of the canal walls. We made two sets of lock gates which were made out of balsa wood and two pieces of wooden dowelling. We then painted the gates white and black on either side of the canal walls. We made a path which was painted green and we stuck trees to it to made it more realistic.

We could have improved it by cutting a strip of card and putting it up either side to make it neater. I would also like to cut out the cardboard and put a very small plant pot and put some soil in it, then we could put real plants in the soil to grow along the canal sides. I would like to make it a lot longer so it would look more like a real lock. I would also like to seal up the lock on the end so I could fill it with water. I would also like to make my own boat to sail on the lock.
