Account of a visit to Llangynidr Locks
by Hayley.

Visit to the Llangynidr locks.

When we went to the locks we saw a canal boat going through the locks.

Before the canal boat could go through he had to wait until the water is level. We saw a woman opening the locks. When the canal boat went through the locks the woman closed them back up until the next boat came. After that we all had a go at opening the lock gates and closing them up. Before we opened them we had to get the windlass to turn so it could unlock the canal lock operating-system. To open the locks we had to push the locks open and close them.

They use canal locks because the hills go up and down. The locks looked like big black doors with a long wooden handle to open and close it. We followed the feeder leet up to where it met the river and we saw a moveable dam. They used the moveable dam to stop water going through to the canal if they did not want any more water passing through and open it if there was not enough water in the canal.

They used a plug to drain the canal if they need to rebuild the locks or to mend part of the canal. I enjoyed going to the canals because we all had a go at opening and closing them up. I enjoyed watching the canal boat going through the locks, I also learnt how the canal locks operating system worked.
