A Visit To The Quarries and Incline.

On the 14th May 1999 we went to the Llangattock hills to see the limestone quarries.

We walked along old tram road and we could see bits of remaining tracks from the old tram road. On the tram road horses would pull carts back and forward picking up limestone which men would dig up and load it in to the carts. Then we walked up the hills and stopped by a big rock and Vicar did a demonstration to show us an everlasting chain. An everlasting chain is a circular chain which pulls carts up and down the hills. The chain would go from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill. Vicar explained about how it would work. There would also be a big wheel at the top of the hill and a man would sit in the control room to make sure the carts were all right going up and down the hill. Vicar also showed us were it would have been.

We walked over to the cliff and looked down. We could see the fields, roads and the canal. We started to walk back to the bus and it started to rain but we had great fun at the lime-stone quarries.
