By travelling an average of seven and a half hours a day, and starting early
in the morning when the canal was at it's best, we travelled a total of 232
miles, through 125 locks and moving for 101 hours in our thirteen full days
and two half days.
The Route...
Friday 9th August. Blue Lias Marina via Napton Junction to the bottom of Napton Locks on the Southern Oxford canal.
Saturday 10th August Bottom of Napton Locks down the Southern Oxford canal to moor just before Cropredy Village.
Sunday 11th August From above Cropredy Village down the Southern Oxford canal to just before Somerton Deep Lock. Visiting Banbury on the way.
Monday 12th August. Through Somerton Deep Lock on down the Southern Oxford Canal to Duke's Cut junction just North of Oxford.
Tuesday 13th August. From Duke's Cut down the Southern Oxford to moor in Oxford just above Isis Lock. Then out via Isis lock onto the Thames and up the river to moor by Swinford Bridge. After a visit into Oxford.
Wednesday 14th August. Continued up the Thames to moor just above Kelmscot for the night.
Thursday 15th August. Went up to the Head of Navigation on the Thames above Lechlade, winded there and came back down the Thames to moor just after Tadpole bridge. Spent time exploring Lechlade.
Friday
16th August. Down the River Thames, passing Oxford to moor just to the South
below Sandford Lock.
Saturday 17th August. Down the River Thames to moor just below Goring. Visited Dorchester village.
Sunday 18th August. Down the River Thames to Whitchurch lock just above Reading, winded there and came back up the Thames to just after Abingdon. Visited Abingdon.
Monday 19th August. Up the Thames via Oxford, stopping for a visit there. On up the Thames to moor just before Eynsham lock.
Tuesday 20th August. Back down the Thames to Duke's cut, then through it to rejoin the Southern Oxford canal and up that canal to moor near Somerton village.
Wednesday 21st August. On up the Southern Oxford canal, via Banbury, visiting the town again. to moor at Cropredy.
Thursday 22nd August. On up the Southern Oxford canal
over the summit level to moor at the foot of Napton locks.
Friday 23rd August. Up the Southern Oxford to Napton
junction, then East on the Grand Union to Blue Lias marina.
(For the 13 full days we were on Cropredy this mean each day an average of
7.5 hours on the move, with 9 locks and 17 miles covered. )
