PRAYER FOR PRIESTS –
O Lord Jesus, you have chosen priests from among us and sent them to proclaim your word and to act in your name. For so great a gift to your Church, we give you praise and thanksgiving. We ask you to fill them with the fire of your love, that their ministry may reveal your presence in the Church. Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that your power shine through their weakness. In their afflictions, let them never be crushed; in their doubts, never dispair; in temptation, never be destroyed; in persecution, never abandoned. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of your dying and rising. In times of weakness send them your Spirit, and help them to praise your hesvenly Father and to pray for poor sinners. By the same Holy Spirit, put your word on their lips and your love in their hearts, to bring good news to the poor aNd healing to the broken-hearted. And may the gift of Mary, your Mother, to the Disciple whom you loved, be your gift to every priest. Grant that she who formed you in her human image, may form in them your divine image, by the power of your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. AmenThis week we particularly remember:
Prayer for a Priestly Heart.
Give mo, O Lord, an ever watchful heart which no subtle speculation may ever lure from you. Give me a noble heart that no unworthy affection shall ever draw downwards to earth. Give me a heart of honesty that no insincerity shall warp. Give me a heart of courage that no distress shal ever crush or quench. Give me a heart so free that no perverted or impetuous affection shall ever claim it for its own.
St. Thomas Aquinas.

Pope Benedict XVI has called the whole church to celebrate the Year for Priests. His purpose for this year is to encourage priests in the “striving for spiritual perfection on which, above all, the effectiveness of their ministry depends” and to highlight “the importance of the priest’s role and mission in the church and in contemporary society”. To do this the Holy Father calls us to a renewed focus on the centrality of Christ in our lives and in the Church and that “brings with it the correct appreciation of the ministerial priesthood, without which there would be neither the Eucharist, nor even the mission nor the Church herself”. The same year is the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of priests, and also the occasion of the visit to England of the relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux – who from her Carmelite convent showed her life long devotion to priests by praying for them, supporting them and corresponding with them. Let us join with these great saints in praying for our own priests and priests throughout the world. There is a year calendar displayed at the back of church inviting you to pray every day of the year for a priest who either belong to, or is working in, our diocese. here“The priest is not a priest for himself; he is not for himself he is for you” SEEKERS –
