Whirlpool 7 - Nov to end of Dec 1999

whirlpool 7 "cover stars" are REMY ZERO they recently returned to the UK shores and won devotees during their support slot on the Travis tour with  their (so far)  highly underestimated genius. Not under estimated at Rocklands though, we shall continue to recommend them until enough people see the light! (more, further down page - days in the life...)

ROCKLANDS ZERO WORSHIP always at PROPHECY pages

talking of Remy Zero, "word of mouth" runs through much of Whirlpool 7. talking of "word of mouth", good to see Terris (see Whirlpool 6), proclaimed "future of rock" in a national uk music paper (along with Orange Can), mid november and hats off to the return of The Letter From Newport. The Bard (whose famed Frug Records Newport cherub the Stone Roses "borrowed" for "The Second Coming" is now in Cyberspace. Highly recommend you pay him a visit! (and keep an ear on the word of mouth of fanzines and websites...)

Oi! Telly dudes! Why don't we have BANDSTAND instead of GRANDSTAND? Why don't we have a Broadcast On Behalf Of The Rock N Roll Party? Can see it now... A montage collage of film, music, rant, photography, prose and art. Life in the 90s through the eyes of the party that is rock and roll. the soundtrack of today's   Education, alienation, multi culturalism, health, sex and sexuality, alternative lifestyles, devolution, unity/disunity, homelessness, social values, unemployment, family values, politics, fashion, sport, comedy, drama - how about Little Baby Swastika (Skunk Anansie), You're Not My Babylon (These Animal Men - video already appropriate), A Design For Life (MSP live intro instrumental - video already appropriate) Call It What You Want (Credit To The Nation) - any more?

'Walk this Way', by Run DMC would be a good one, against images of 60s Keith Richards as high as a kite" (Danny Popplewell, Ooberman). Read the full Ooberman interview at Whirlpool 4

Denzil are a new band starting to make waves, they recently played a GLR session and if you would be interested in contacting them  a tape, seeing them live or just more information email denzilt@sbn.co.uk
International Jetset released a self-financed ltd. run of 500 copies. "Shang-A-Lang/Goldfish" (Fake Umbrella Records) is a Slade City Rollers-tastic alternative guitar stomper, 90s  glam -v- 90s glum, come and have a go. Gigs soon too, email International Jetset on intjetset@aol.com
everybody needs something to cheer about and there should be no boundaries in pop, great artists have no country. the land of song continues to live up to its name. Red Dragon Radio published a book of hymns & arias in welsh/english. Alongside "Land of My Fathers", "Bread Of Heaven" and "Wales Forever" were "A Design For Life", "International Velvet" and "A Thousand Trees". Respect. Nuff said... p.s. any places of rock n roll interest to add to the ROCK N ROLL ISLES PAGES AT IRELAND, SCOTLAND, WALES, or ENGLAND? Speaking of Wales, Friday 12th November, an excellent night out at ENTER THE DRAGON, an XFM night featuring Welsh bands was absolutely stonking! Ruby Cruiser, The Duvals and Varispeed. Three rocking outfits and an atmosphere second to none. A cross of friends and rock fans checking out buzzy names.
Camden's Dublin Castle was stuffed with revellers all night, first on were Varispeed who can't help being a name to look out for. Early days, but they had good tunes, innovation and great stage presence. The guitarist is mesmerising and the singer is a show man! Next up, The Duvals, who word is already out about as quite a few people had travelled to see them tear up the stage with their shamelessly huge pop tunes and spread their infectious joy to the crowd. Ruby Cruiser rounded things off nicely and loudly but I dunno about the "90s Foo Fighters" tag in the listings, there's even a touch of punkabilly in there... Everybody had an excellent night out and then went even more berserk first at Dublin Castle, then all back to The House Of Rock for a "session". Next morning Ruby Cruiser drove away in their old post office van, it's a cruiser and it really is ruby! Ha Ha! Roll on more lunacy!

Wales retains the the crown "Land Of Song" with a glamorous, androgyneous, rocktastic night in Cardiff for the End Of Century Party...Manic Millenium

Air Guitar Championships! You are cordially invited to the 1999 National Air-Guitar Championships at the Camden Lock HQ hosted by members of Rachel Stamp.
This highly under-rated art-form has often been dismissed as 'sad' and 'pitiful', however, on Tuesday 14th December many of the country's finest Air-Guitarists hope to prove the critics wrong. The Scandanavian National Champion,Jars 'Thrust' Lundgvist, who may be attending this years competition recently spoke on the subject:
"People may dismiss this as a waste of time, but its a highly developed artform. I spend around 3 hours a day practising my poses and cranium-dips as well as an hour a day doing weights to build my neck muscles. I plan on going professional in the year 2000."
Jars impressed this year's judges with his 'Thrust Special', a triple
scissor kick move and recently recorded an incredible 3 head bangs per second!
Before this flurry of mullet madness: Monkey Spunk Moped (featuring a member of The Prodigy) + Sludgefeast + Birdman Ray (featuring former members of 3 Colours Red & Menswear).
Tuesday 14th December:Camden Lock HQ

Sludgefeast: Sometimes a joke can backfire on you-but rarely so well as for this band, originally formed as a bit of fun but since-through popular demand for their insane take on the rock and roll myth-they have been forced to consider themselves a 'real' band. Already available is their first single "Baby, you fuck me up" and soon to be releasedis an album of songs all featuring the words 'rock and roll' in their title. They can play 22 songs in 15 minutes and plan to release a single which is only 26 seconds long! An album release will be available in 2000 from FFVinyl/Zinc Splash Records.

Patrick Jones' second sell-out stage success in one year was witnessed with the following report among it's rave reviews...

UNPROTECTED SEX

Mesmerising. That is one word to describe it. From the word go you are glued to these three actors - strong, confident, word perfect - diction so precise (even in the strong Welsh accent) that you don't miss one cross word.
The stage is very bare with few props, but who needs props with words as strong as these - we even squirm in our seats as some parts of this play remind you of present and past relationships.
The one thing I am very disappointed about is that the wonderful conscience of the play, who remarks on every part of our injured man's mind why he bullies his wife, why he treats her like shit, suddenly turns out to be a real person. I WANTED him to carry on so we could hopefully find out how one half of a relationship's mind works when they are treating their partner so badly. Such a brilliant concept.

So, okay, me and my friend who watched this, amazed, and talked about it for hours after are Manics fans  like   90% of the audience, but Patrick Jones deserves 100% praise for unbelievable writing.
Sometimes you really wish he was not Mr N Wire's brother so that the critical acclaim he deserves came his way, anyway.

Party Pam

Patrick's first play, "Everything Must Go" will tour the UK early in the year 2000. For all things Patrick Jones, check out the Mute Communion site at : http://www.patrickjones.co.uk

Subject: Rick Rose Rude is famous!
Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 18:02:57 PST
FROM THE GRAVEYARD OF EMPTY BOTTLES A MOLOTOV COCKTAIL TOAST!!!!!!!!!!
Rick Rose Rude recently did an interveiw with underground mag Crypt 33. Rolling Stone have been harrassing owner Droux Suicide to fork the interveiw over. However, she's holding out for more loot. As soon as they meet her price expect to see the interveiw in the next Rolling Stone. On 11/27/99, David MacKay recorded a Rick Rose Rude performance at the K & K. MTV are offering HUGE amounts of money to air it on MTV Unplugged. David MacKay is also negotiating with VH1 to turn his Rick Rose Rude documentary
over to them so they can air as a Behind The Music episode. Either way, Mr. MacKay looks very likely to walk away from knowing Rick Rose Rude a VERY wealthy man.
In other news, Rick's homemade cassette has gone platinum & has been riding the #1 spot for quite some time now. You can't turn on the radio without hearing "Amphetamine Blues" or seeing it's accompanying video on the music channels.
Rick plans to marry his long time girlfriend Christina Spears after his
world tour with The Backstreet Sync ends in early January.
He'll make it home in time to play the K & K in Ocala, Fl on the 15th &
28th.
Until next time,
Life's a gas & it always will be!
P.S. Most of this update is basically one big lie but Rick beleives you can
sepaerate the fact from fantasy.

Check out the new Rick Rose Rude Web page at:
