| Gallery : Rocklands is one big
outdoor gallery with many murals dotted outside throughout Nu-x, Deptford and
Greenwich. Literature : Robin Jarvis wrote The Deptford Mice
a story which I saw at a friend's house on tape read by Tom Baker.
My interest was aroused right then - it's a cult children's (sometimes a bit scary) story.

Music : With a network
of bands and contacts, and the improved public transport, the possibility of regular live
music events is being looked into depending on the interest in this project of local
venues. Since the Share The Joy party at the end of 001, the music industry have managed
to descend, en masse to an area that you dont often see live reviews from in the
national press, on more than one occasion. Local musicians are up for getting something
together...
Art Education : Goldsmiths College is based in Nu-X and all manner of positive
alternative culture is around it. www.goldsmiths.ac.uk.
Wired Radio, the college radio station, is at www.wired.gold.ac.uk.
- music coverage (reviews, listings, interviews etc) at www.smiths.gold.ac.uk.
Events : Deptford Festival takes place in September and show
cases the community unity, fun vibe and wealth of creativity in the local area. There is
also Greenwich Film Festival and a World Music festival held in Greenwich
Park. Lewisham People's Day also takes place each Summer.
The Arts play a big part in the feel of the place.
Much theatre around. Rhys Ifans used to live in Nu-X and sings the
praises of the local area. Dominic Chad of Mansun also
recently remarked on the feel of the place. Loads of band members and roadies live in this
part of the capital. Mark Perry of Alternative TV did
the first punk fanzine Sniffing Glue and ATV released
records on the Deptford Fun City label. Squeeze, Vic & Bob,
Dire Straits also have history around here. There are all kinds of local
performers, writers, artists, DJs etc...
Art : Deptford becomes
one big canvas during June when Deptford X takes over. Exhibitions and
galleries galore...
Film :
Recently I saw "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII" (Keith Michell, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Asher, Donald Pleasance) and "The Cockleshell Heroes" (Trevor Howard, Jose Ferrer) -
both films mention Deptford's sea-faring importance. Apart from a few hints of a nautical
history though, I don't see it's giant history fully reflected locally. (pic - Deptford Creek)
