The Duvals began at the end of the 20th century when singer, Andrew
and his twin cousins Stewart (drums) and Paul (guitar) moved from Briton
Ferry, South Wales to the squat punk scene of Hackney, East London.
They formed a gang with fellow music obsessives Howie (guitar) from
Wakefield and Umbi (bass) from Venice and have lived an intensively rock n roll
life together since then.
On paper, The Duvals, as a band, fall way outside being
"cool". Thats fine with them, theyre for real. They are at the other
end of the spectrum from "celebrity". They havent written and played their
music whenever they could, for the past few years just to gain fame and fortune. Although
some recognition is always nice, its a deep love of music that drives this band.
On stage, The Duvals rock loud with a driving beat drenched in
guitar hooks and played with showy style. Their gigs have continually won enough friends
to have built a regular following via word of mouth, old skool punk flyers and the d.i.y.
ethic with the help of their friends.
They started 2002 by playing Europe - twice - on their own steam. This may
have meant night sleeping in their tour van (in Berlin they slept on the stage of the
venue through a party!) - but it was all worth it. They sold out most of the Germany /
Switzerland dates.
During their first trip to Holland for the monthly Crime Jazz event, they
won over audiences expecting an acoustic -like act and even sold out of merchandise. "Like
Slade on Top Of The Pops" said one new friend. Such is the infection
charm of The Duvals.
Their debut LP, "Beauty", was released at the end of 2001
(on Surrey punk label Mother Stoat ) and is still earning them great reviews, new
friends and support for their 20th century rocknroll life.
Why do people keep going to see these uncool nobodies over and over again?
The answer is at their gigs...
