Mid-week-weekend in Paradise, Summer 004

Tuesday 8 June - Pop Of The Tops

There are new bands, and there are entertaining new bands. Tonight three of the latter - Rhesus, Black Bikini Alpha, The Violets - and two joy-sharing new DJs, Blenda, warmed up an already sweltering evening.

The night proved whispers of New Cross cool just an illusion. It was so uncool that folks were sweating and a bit lethargic, but not on stage. Only stars in waiting there.

The Violets confidence has grown with their developed esp on stage, their sound, their performance and as a vision of iconic rock they make a classic picture in a line of three rocking out to the dancy beat of punk delicate. Something for everybody, if the boys could tear their eyes off Alexis, the chemistry between her and Joe’s guitar heroics and the exuberance of Andrew’s drumming, well... keep an eye and ear close...

I dress crap myself, but love the budget chic of South East London, (the punk babe front lady's fuck-me boots were buy-one, get one free, for a fiver!) that stylist=mirror thing was continued by Black Bikini Alpha, another welcome return to Paradise from a band as in-yer-face as your cheekbones. They delivered a blast of rock n roll and probably lost half a stone between them in the process...

Rhesus are (like the other bands) Paradise regulars so it was great to prise them from the bar and on to the stage and they don’t disappoint. They were the monkey business, but impish chimpish puns aside, they weren’t aping around too much even though it was Muz the bassists last show. I found them serious and 4real, just with an engaging smile and timeless punk irreverence of “cool”, it was about having fun. You could feel they were and it’s catching. Oh and I like the way Jim's t-shirt says ART IS FUC DEAD on the front and KING ont the back...yeah...

So what if these bands haven't garnered next big thing tags and all that shit. That’s why we need as much new media that can get off it’s arse and react, as possible, it’s not a reflection in any way on the potential of these bands if they keep aiming for the stars. Their on stage shows were already a step on from the steady stream of thousands upon thousands of new bands playing hundreds of new band nights across Britainireland this very night alone. In my humble opinion though, some bands have an added something. Three more alternative rock idols then...

They’d made an effortless effort to look the part too. Pop Of The Tops is about bands that would liven up Top Of The Pops, so three cheers and big luck to tonight’s live music performers.

Cider, drugs, good music, mobile phone at home, no proper sleep since sunday, free sauna with every trip out of the door and loads of lovely people. No wonder I kept laughing out loud to myself every now and then, I was having fun. THAT’s entertainment.

All this in a little mad bar, in a little mad part of town. Sometimes half full, sometimes rammed, sometimes almost empty. Always laid back and friendly. It makes Rocklands exist, the people here are organic components of the Karma.

It’s not New Cross that’s cool, whatever that means when used as a trendy marketing expression (I’m from Deptford myself, weird world central, cool is an aura or chips that haven’t been scoffed fast enough). Cool? That aura is due to the unheard of, unwatched, unexposed and undaunted entertainers that not only know rock’n’roll can save the world, but get off their fucking arses to prove it. The Unscene, if you will.

p.s. my bastard camera lead thingy is broken so I can’t take pix (need to lend an ac adaptor) but Rocklands top music site, Daz from Cozzie Music , was taking pictures, so have a shufty there...

Wednesday 9 June - New Wave Of New Rock

Ladyfuzz and Accelerator rule. Last minute short notice as The Paradise now have individual promotors putting on shows at what will become Pirate FM (on line or other radio, bring a mini-disc and with the performers, take a slice of Paradise away and put it on air). We hadn’t got that far yet, but two hot bands and Willow on the decks made for a great and surreal night out to launch the idea. It will work

Accelerator came from Brighton (requested back after a Pop Of The Tops appearance) and rocked the stage, the floor, the house and themselves. If it wasn’t already hot and sweaty, they are the garage-punk rock’n’roll band that would make it. Word is out and national radio folks were checking them out big time.

Ladyfuzz haven’t done many gigs and were having to keep a low profile as they have the kind of buzz (erm, Ladybuzz?) that can be as much of a hinderance to your career as it’s hype can be a push, so it was the ideal night for them. New century wave rocking with attitude and odditude doesn’t really describe them but that’s what it felt like. Post punk art rock describes them.

Yes, really enjoyed that too! Two days, five great bands, two evenngs of great rock’n’roll DJing, cheap as chips, cheerful as chipmunks and as promising as the seaside when there’s not a cloud in the sky... More wmid week weekends in Paradise coming up...
