A
MESSAGE FROM ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN, CHRIS
SMART I give you a warm welcome to the Bridgend website. We
are a thriving Association with four enthusiastic branches and an Executive
Council of 41 members. it has always been our aim to mix social and political
activities and that we do to considerable effect. Regular wine chats are held at Porthcawl's Esplanade Hotel as well as Garden Parties, Quiz nights and other social gatherings staged by the Bridgend branches. The Association has a fund raising committee and co-ordinates a Dinner Club which brings together members in a pleasant, informal atmosphere at venues across the Constituency. I have been Chairman of the Association since 1998 when I took over that office from Elsie Chard who had a distinguished three year spell at the helm. Having a life-long passion for politics, it is my aim to strengthen the party throughout the area. I served for a year as South Wales Central Area Chairman and stood for the Welsh Assembly as candidate in the Ogmore Constituency. Our Association was created in 1982 knitting together parts of the 'then' Aberavon and Ogmore Constituencies and our first MP, elected in 1983, was Conservative Peter Hubbard-Miles. With a vote of around 17,000 Peter was successful by 1,600 and when he lost the seat four years later, that vote did not fall significantly but the centre vote collapsed, allowing labour's Wyn Griffiths to reach Parliament. Local Councillor David Unwin stood in 1992 and polled very well. We are always keen to recruit members who either wish to be active or just want to lend support. We are anxious to find able candidates for local government elections and it is the view of my Executive Council that suitable people could consider progressing to fighting seats in the Welsh Assembly and Parliament.
