Coll's Intensive Programme at the Autism Treatment Centre of America

Coll was great on the flight. We spent four hours in Iceland en route and were treated to a dip in a thermal spring under blue skies. Coll loved it and laughed a lot.

He fell asleep just as we touched down in Boston! We stayed overnight, then drove to the Treatment Centre the next day. It is situated in the beautiful wooded hills and mountains of western Massachusetts.

We stayed in a self-contained unit which included the playroom where Coll spent 10 hours each day. Toby and I had private teaching sessions throughout each day, but took a lovely walk to the 'Mountain House' for our lunches.
It was amazing to have this time together to talk and think about things.
We received invaluable training in how to make our playroom skills more effective, training our volunteers, observation and giving feedback, setting programme goals, initiating activities to inspire growth, and much much more.

Coll ran happily into the playroom at 8.00am and came out at 6.00pm for a bath before bed. Each day the Son-Rise facilitators worked with him to encourage interaction: eye contact, speech, concentration span and participation in games. They joined him wholeheartedly in his exclusive and repetitive behaviours to build a bridge of trust and understanding and built strongly on his own motivations. They were all highly skilled professionals who seemed to have so much fun! It was fantastic to watch them.

Coll's progress was amazing. His eye contact was charted to have increased by 500% over the course of the week and he started really trying to talk! He said, mum, eggs, water, no water, your turn, bubble, up and down, drink, eat. This is so exciting for us! Toby and I had short playroom sessions daily after which we received training and feedback. We have returned truly inspired, excited and more committed than ever to Coll's Son-Rise Programme. We have seen glimpses of the potential he has and we are determined to help him fulfil it.

So another huge thank you to all of you who raised the money to get us there.

It was an incredible experience which has already had a great impact on our programme here on Knoydart and will continue to do so.
The Son-Rise staff were amazed to hear of all the funds raised by this small community and friends. We feel so lucky to be able to run our programme here and feel so supported by all of the interest and enthusiasm we receive from you all.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you

Lots of love from Katherine and Toby
