“Video images expose the lack of authenticity in the female image, presenting a 1940’s Hollywood bathing star as the epitome of the feminine.  The cinema of Esther Williams, Olympic swimmer, the only MGM star to “dip her toe in water” juxtaposed with the paradox of a mock heterogeneous femininity.  Ultimately, perhaps, the impossibility of creating a homogeneous image of femininity”
