Solar PV October 2010 back to archive
Our solar PV system was installed on the 5th May 2010 by Solar Technologies, a British Gas company. We went with this installer as a condition of accepting a 25 year interest free loan for the equipment under a pilot scheme for the Pay As You Save scheme run by British Gas with the Energy Saving Trust.
The system (panels plus inverter) cost £12,500 which was slightly more than we could have paid had we shopped around, however the benefit of the interest free loan more than offset this.
We have 12 panels totalling 2.1 kW of peak generating capacity. Since May the highest day's kW hours generated has been 15, and the lowest 3. The overall daily average May to September was 9.2 kWh. The daily averages by month were: May 9.6, June 11.2, July 11.0, August 7.8 and 6.9 in September.
In mid August we submitted our first three months generation meter reading for the Feed In Tariff. The reading was questioned by Centrica as being "out of tolerance" - ie too high. We provided a photograph of the meter and the reading was accepted, and we have now received our first FIT cheque for £413. The British Gas forecast FIT for a full year was £750, we think it could be more like £900, reflecting in part the sunny weather patterns on the south coast. Our electricity bills are currently less than 30% of previous level. Overall the payback period could be 10-12 years including the lower electricity bill benefit..
The forecast kWh for the year by British Gas was 1700, and the reading on October 24th (almost 6 months since installation) was 1447.
