On the 10th October we organised an event to celebrate the 10:10 campaign - over 30 people came, many of whom had not visited the house before, and most came by bike or public transport. It was very much a social event, with a mix of local, organic and Fairtrade wines with food much of which had been grown in the garden.
The basic structure of the studio had been completed by Rysons in the first week of October, and we were working on putting windows in and starting to insulate the building. We're not sure what heating we will have in the studio, so we're trying to insulate it as well as possible. Underfloor there will be 100mm of polystyrene plus 75mm of Ecotherm, and the roof and walls will have 50mm of Ecotherm between the rafters and studs with a further 25mm of Ecotherm under the plasterboard to provide a complete thermal break. The double doors are triple glazed, originally intended for the house before we changed the plans, plus double glazed units reclaimed from the original house.
Finally the last triple glazed window unit arrived and was installed - a great relief to see the back of the old uPVC double glazed windows.
One of the last structural jobs to be done on the house was the green oak frame for the balcony to the bedroom at the back of the house. We're still deciding whether to use glass for the balustrade infill panels, ore more probably to use vertical tensioned wires which will be much cheaper.
