Notes made by John Blaylock, 5th May 2001
William Blaylock was a gardener and grocer of Bowness on Windermere.
The 1861 Census taken at Bowness on Windermere reads as follows:
Wiliam Blaylock, head, married, 55, Grocer, Little Langdale.
Mary Blaylock, wife, married, 53, Colton, Lancs.
William, son, unm, 26 Joiner. Applethwaite.
John Blaylock, son, unm, 21 Boatman, Applethwaite.
Robert Blaylock, son, unm, 16 Painters apprentice, Applethwaite.
James Blaylock, son, unm. 12, Scholar, Applethwaite.
Elizabeth Studholme, unm, 22 House Servant, Claife.
James Coward. unm, 21, Joiner, Ambleside.
John Pattinson, 34 Plasterer, Coniston.
Edward Holme, unm. 24, Plasterer, Claife.
He made a Will on the 28th November 1876 leaving the grocery business to his dear wife Mary with a provision also made for his four sons William, John, Thomas and Robert. Mary however died before William and Letters of Administration were taken out by John Titterington Bownass, Solicitor, the original Sole Executor of the Will, on 9th August 1887.
Thomas Blaylock, bachelor aged 30, a tailor of Highgate, Kendal, the son of William Blaylock, grocer, married Ester Ann Slater aged 19, spinster, daughter of John Slater, a brewer of Stricklandgate, Kendal, on 14th April 1873 at St.George's Church, Kendal. Witnesses James Atkinson and Alice Atkinson.
Robert Blaylock was a House Painter by trade but he may also have had a Grocery Shop as follows:
"Kellys Directory 1897, Blaylock, Robert, Grocer, St. Martin's Place, Bowness on Windermere".
