The Family of John Blaylock, born Walton, Cumberland who migrated to Windermere, Westmorland in 1802.

Notes

1. John Blaicklock (later Blaylock)-80

notes made by John Blaylock 5th May 2001.

The John Blaylock listed here is a most important member of my family history as it is this John from whom I have inherited my name and it is this John who took my Blaylock family line down from North Cumberland to Bowness on Windermere, Westmorland.

The 1851 Census taken at Bowness on Windermere tells us that John was aged 85 and born in the village of Walton, Cumberland. Ideally I am looking for a baptism in Walton in the year 1766 but after extensive research no such record can be found. The following record is however included in the Walton Parish Register:-

"23 June 1771 John son of William Blaicklock of Walton Baptized"

Despite the disparity in the date I am now convinced that this is the John Blaylock who migrated to Bowness on Windermere, Westmorland. I do not say this lightly as whilst it is easy to dismiss ages quoted in parish registers and census records as often inaccurate, I ask the question, if this is not my John, what became of the John Blaicklock baptized in Walton? We know from the Militia List that he survived in Walton until 1797 and that there is no record of his marriage or burial in Walton or the surrounding Parishes. It is my submission that he moved to the Parish of Carlisle St. Cuthbert, probably to stay with his older brother Christopher Blacklock, who was now an innkeeper in this same Parish of Carlisle and where he met Catharine Douglas. They married on 16th May 1799.

The first record we have of a stated age for John is his second marriage to Betty Mayson at Sebergham in 1802. Here he is said to be 35 years old and I simply believe he overstated his age by four or five years. This error was then perpetuated in all subsequent records.

The following are my family history notes on this John Blaylock:-

Name: JOHN BLAYLOCK

Baptized: 23.6.1771, Walton, Cumberland
Parents: William & Sarah Blacklock

Married1: Catherine Douglas 16.5.1799 Carlisle St. Cuthbert's

Married2: Betty Mayson, 1.2.1802, Sebergham

Died: 5.1.1852, Bowness on Windermere
Buried: 8.1.1852 St. Martin's Churchyard, Bowness on Windermere

It is reasonable to assume that in 1797 John Blacklock was a servant in the employment of Henry Calvert.

Sebergham Marriage Register

Bans of marriage between John Blaylock of the parish of Bowness, Westmorland and Betty Mayson of Woodhouses within the Demesne of the Manor of Rose Castle deemed extra parochial were published in the church 3 several Sundays viz. January 17th, 24th and 31st by me John Stubbs Assistant Curate.

John Blaylock of the parish of Bowness, Westmorland labourer aged 35 and Betty Mayson of Woodhouses Spinster aged 32 were married in this church 1st February 1802 by me John Stubbs Assistant Curate. Witnesses Joseph Faulder and John Stubbs.

Note:- A John Stubbs was a witness to the first marriage to Catharine Douglas in Carlisle in 1799 but research suggests he was the husband of a sister of Catharine Douglas and not the Rev. John Stubbs, Assistant Curate at Sebergham.

The wife of John Stubbs, Assistant Curate of Sebergham, was Mary Blaylock of Burgh by Sands but I can find no connection between her family in Burgh and the family of John Blaylock of Walton. Mary had died at Sebergham giving birth to her ninth child on 30th June 1794.

A John Mayson was Curate at Orton in 1829 (Parson & White Directory). Orton is 1.1/2 miles north from Woodhouses, the home before marriage of Betty Mayson. Was he a relative of Betty?

Children

John Blalock, farmer, Browhead

Census 1851 Bowness on Windermere, Westmorland

John Blaylock, Widower, Age 85, father to head of family, Agricultural Labourer, Born Walton, Cumberland.

We can deduce from this record that John was now living in Bowness at the home of his second son William who is shown as being the head of the family.

Monumental Inscriptions

There is no gravestone in St. Martins Churchyard Bowness to mark the grave of this John and his wife Betty. I feel there must have been one at some time but it has been removed. Much work was done to this church in the period 1870-1873 when it was enlarged, restored and the present chancel built. It may have been during this period that the gravestone was removed.

The following is a record of an M.I. in Dalston Churchyard to John's first wife Catharine and their child Betty:-

Carlisle R.O. - P.88 (247)

In Memory / of Catherine, / the wife of John Blaylock, / of Calgarth, in Westmorland, / who died March 16th 1801, / aged 81* years. / Also of Elizabeth, their daughter, / who died Feb 3rd 1800, / aged 1 day

* The age of 81 given for Catherine is clearly an error in transcript and probably should read 31.

General Notes

The name Blaylock is very much associated with Carlisle and the Scottish Border region. The name in the records can also be written as Blacklock, Blaicklock, Blakelock or Blalock, it is very much a matter of preference of the writer of the record at the time. In general there is a transition in the records from Blacklock and Blaicklock to Blaylock at about 1790. In one record I found a William Blacklock had married Margaret Graham on 25th June 1795 and both had signed in clear hands their new surname as Blaylock, surely indicating how the newly married couple intended to be known in future.

The founder of the Blaylock family of Clockmakers was also baptized as John Blacklock although all his clocks I have come across are signed Blaylock.

4. William Blaylock-24

note made by John Blaylock, 5th May 2001

William Blaylock was a gardener and grocer of Bowness on Windermere.

He made a Will on the 28th November 1876 leaving the grocery business to his dear wife Mary with a provision also made for his four sons William, John, Thomas and Robert. Mary however died before William and Letters of Administration were taken out by John Titterington Bownass, Solicitor, the original Sole Executor of the Will, on 9th August 1887.
