A BLAYLOCK FAMILY HISTORY My Family Tree Bowness on Windermere from a print of c.1835 I would think the view is from the lower slopes of Post Knott which my father called Mount Scoundrel. I have found publishing a family tree by way of a computer screen is quite difficult. My preference is for a hard copy print in A3 format that can be unfolded in landscape to show an old style drop line tree. The detail can then be examined in the comfort of one's favourite armchair. Unfortunately this type of presentation is not a practical reality on a computer screen. Having Looked at the computer software available I have chosen a program called GedHTree as I feel this is the closest alternative to my ideal A3 sheet of paper. In compiling my family tree I wish to acknowledge the extensive help given to me by other researchers. First I would thank Doreen and Jack Foxcroft of Bromborough, Wirral, England who provided extensive information on my Blaylock family in Westmorland. I share with Jack a common ancestor, John Blaylock, born Walton, Cumberland, who took the family line southwards to Windermere. Sybil Cant of Baldock, Hertfordshire is a constant correspondence with regard to the Blaylock families of North Cumberland. I enjoy her letters enormously and I thank her for the most valuable information provided which has often inspired further research. Su Barton of Eccleston, Lancashire, is researching Blaylock families in the parishes of Dalston and Raughton Head. Her helpful guidance has been most useful and has often prevented me from following incorrect lines of enquiry. On the Coward side of my family, I am indebted to Valerie Fay Bills of Alberta, Canada for greatly extending my knowledge of the Coward Family Tree. I must also mention Tom and Mary Read of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, who have provided much information on the Coward family of Hawkshead and with particular reference to my grandmother, Emma Coward. The staff of both Carlisle and Kendal Record Offices have always been courteous and understanding when dealing with my enquiries and requests for information. To anyone I have omitted, I send my apologies but thank them all the same. The
GEDHTREE program provides a direct line of ancestors from one of four named individuals
shown on the Index Page. Click on the blue arrows to proceed back in time or if details of
siblings are required, click on the name of the relevant father or mother. Additional
information may sometimes be found by clicking on the "N" notes access icon. Following further research it has been established that Edward Blacklock was not the father of the William Blacklock who married Sarah Irwin (Irwing) at Walton, Cumberland on 20th June 1753. Edward did indeed have a son William but he died at Canonbie and was buried there 20th February 1768, aged 35. The origin of the William Blacklock who married Sarah Irwin is therefore at present unknown. Some additions to the Coward family of Hawkshead have been nade following information received from Roxana Joy Openshaw, née Coward.
