Read something new to your experience but within your capability. Points to
remember:
| 1. | Look at the time signature. The top figure tells the number of beats in every bar. The bottom figure indicated what type of not is represented at every beat. |
| 2: | How fast (tempo) should the beat (pulse) go? Establish this in your mind while check the next items... |
| 3. | Look at the Key (or Scale) Signature. Try to think about these flats or sharps in the Scale. |
| 4. | Is it in a Major or Minor Scale? If a Minor Scale then there may be some 'accidentals' in the piece...Check the last note as this will inevitably be the Key note or Scale name. |
| 5. | What style is required for the piece? |
| 6. | How loud? What dynamic is written and are there changes to the dynamics of the piece? Look for expression marks. |
| 7. | Check out the phrases or breathing places |
| 8. | Which beat of the bar does the first (and subsequent) phrases start |
| 9. | Think the pitch of the piece in your mind. |
| 10. | Now count at least 2 bars in before you start... |

| Playing on a Bb
Trumpet - Parts written for: |
|
| Trumpet in C | Read the Key Signature up 1 tone ( adding 2#'s or taking away 2b's ) and play every note one note higher in the new key signature. (Line up to the next space - space up to the next line) |
| Trumpet in D | Read the Key Signature up a Major 3rd ( adding 4#'s or taking away 4b's ) and play every note a 3rd higher in the new key signature. (Line to line - space to space) |
| Trumpet in A | Change the Key Signature to Flats. This will in effect lower every note ie E Major (4#'s) would become Eb major (3b's). Read the notes as written. OR If it is written in a Flat key, then add 5#'s to the Key Signature and read each note down 1 note. Let the key signature take care of the notes. |
| Trumpet in Eb | Read the Key Signature up a Perfect 4th ( adding 1b or taking away 1# ) and play every note a 4th higher in the new key signature. (Line to space - space to line) |
| Trumpet in E | Read the Key Signature up a Augmented 4th ( adding 6#'s or taking away 6b's ) and play every note a 4th higher in the new key signature. (Line to space - space to line) |
| Trumpet in F | Read the Key Signature up a Perfect 5th ( adding 1# or taking away 1b) and play every note a 5th higher in the new key signature. (Line to line - space to space) |
