Ed was one of the original Policenauts and, along with Jonathan Ingram, was formerly of the Los Angeles Police Department.

When you first meet Ed in the game, he's a few weeks from retirement and is sleeping his days away behind his desk in the BCPD's Vice unit. Considered something of a joke withing the department, Ed lost all motivation following the death of his wife due to kidney stones. He is initially reluctant to get involved in Jonathan's case but is fully on board once they get Gates' approval, since Jonathan cannot act in any official capacity on Beyond Coast.

Ed seems to spend much of the game chastising Jonathan for his treatment of the women they meet, and pointing out all the things he can't do on Beyond Coast (smoking, for starters!).
